Throughout December, CHIRP Radio presents its volunteers’ top albums of 2023. Our next list is from DJ Chris Siuty: Friday Night Freak Out!.
No particular order. This year was a tough one to narrow down, because so much great music came out! It's the most new music I've consumed in a very long time and the albums I thought would be on this list back in May are surprisingly absent. That isn't commentary on the quality of those albums, but the overall quality of the year in releases. While the world falls apart around us, here are my favorite albums of 2023.
I've been a Brad Laner fan since hearing Shot Forth Self Living back in high school. I can honestly say that Medicine has a damn-near perfect discography without a single stinker in the bunch. This album is some great psychedelic shoegaze/dream pop in the same vein as their previous releases. Medicine will always be towards the top of any year end list for me.

Powerful record
Chicago band Flowtone will perform at CHIRP Night at the Whistler on Tuesday, December 5th. We caught up with guitarist/vocalist Nissim recently to ask a few questions…
So...What’s going on? Tell us about your current releases and/or upcoming shows (such as CHIRP Night at the Whistler!).
Well, we just released a new music video for our new single called 'Eats Me Alive'. That was a really fun time to film and we're really happy with how the song came out. Of course, we'll be playing at CHIRP Night at the Whistler on December 5th. Super excited for that!
How do you go about turning your thoughts, ideas, and feelings into sounds?
The music usually leads the process. By that I mean, a lot of times I'll sing gibberish just to map out a melody, then that informs phonetically which lyrics could fall into place. The song doesn't feel "complete" though until there's a full concept in place. That takes a while, a lot of long walks and pondering different ideas and how I should express them. There is a moment where it starts to make sense and the momentum of that helps me finish the song.
